Make sure you have synergy with your Cavapoo!

Cavapoos (Cavadoodles or Cavoodles) are absolutely adorable and expensive to adopt so we want them to thrive in our lifestyles and families; here are 9 Top questions to ask yourself in determining if the cutie cavadoodle will match your life style, these hints will help your cavapoo thrive!

1. Cavapoos / Cavadoodles are friendly, but are you ready?

They love to cuddle, snuggly, lay in your lap, and sometimes will follow you everywhere. They will most likely lick a potential robber. They are not security guards, but are you ready for so many lovable Cavapoo kisses? A Cavoodle owner commented, ““He is extremely affectionate to everyone all with a weird habit of over-kissing.”

2. Cavapoos require moderate daily exercise, ready to move around?

Cavapoo Doodle Puppies or Cavadoodles or Cavoodles have high energy levels. To be happy, they need physical exercise and mental exercise to be well-rounded, jolly, and obedient. They need about one hour of moderate activity every day to be happy. Cavapoos are not suited for busy owners. Due to their energetic and inquisitive nature, they need daily exercise and mental stimulation, which can be time-consuming for their owners. They adapt well to the lifestyle of their owners and aim to please. If you have a yard, ensure that it is well fenced to protect your little dog when he is outside on his own (which is unusual as they will normally be wherever you are). While you are out walking your dog, it is advisable to keep them on a leash unless they are in a fenced area, as they may smell something and forget to come back to you as they check the trail out. One walk per day is mandatory to keep them healthy and happy. They will even love a short hike, but time is short to consume the dog’s energy and keep it happy. A Cavapoo owner shared her experience, “Now I don’t know if it’s because they have spaniel in them but these dogs are off the wall sometimes. Especially D, he has bounds of energy and does need quite the walk.”

3. Cavapoos are very loyal to their owners, are you ready for such deep devotion?

Cavapoos are deeply loyal and devoted to their owners and family. They will always watch out for you and often follow you from room to room to make sure you are okay. They like to be part of the activities and fully engage to be part of the pack.

Cavapoos don’t like to be left alone for long periods and may develop behavioral issues such as excessive barking, destructive behavior or separation anxiety. More than anything, these dogs want to be with the owner all the time; they are not a dog to be ignored or put outside. They are perfect for someone who wants a dog to be part of the family. The Cavapoo will reward you with love, affection, loyalty and undying devotion. A Cavapoo owner shares their experience, “Extremely loving and do love a good cuddle and lick on the sofa at night. I would recommend a Cavapoo for a first-time owner.”

4. Cavapoos are very intelligent, but are you ready for such a smart dog?

They are fast learners, love to perform tricks and get praise and rewards. Training sessions should be short, consistent, enjoyable, fun and not too intensive. It helps to find activities that they would enjoy, plus a variety of activities. A Cavapoo owner shared these sentiments, “” I have never met such an intelligent dog, Q outsmarts my border collie as he is very much food motivated so will do most things for a treat, he learnt to roll over and play dead in just 15 minutes.”

5. Cavapoos are very sensitive to owners feelings

Some Cavapoo owners share their experiences:  “He is a little busy body but I love every minute of it. He’s my emotional support baby and I’m so thankful I have this little ball of fur in my life.” “He chews on everything and anything that he isn’t supposed to.” “Oh boy, he is unique. He is VERY stubborn, and is a very picky eater. He will never stop begging for cheese either. we come in from a walk, grooming appt, or vet appt, etc he goes straight to the fridge and sits down. we all love him though, would never want any other breed. ‘ His coat underwent a matting spell at 14 months, but she grew out of it. Potty training was quick, but housebreaking took a long time (nearly 2 years). I think it was the physical maturing not so much as mental.” Still loves to play at 4 yo and works as a therapy dog in hospitals.” These dogs are always looking to please but do test the boundaries, however, I can’t say what yours might be like that as they will have different personalities.” “Long time barker and my 3rd dog approx. He is a well-behaved dog. He eats his poop when he wakes up sometimes. He constantly rings the bell to go outside and go to the bathroom.”

6. Cavapoos do require supervision, if you have kids are you ready?

Cavapoos or Cavadoodles or Cavoodles need careful supervision when around small and young children to be safe, but can you provide this type of environment as the Cavapoos are not recommended for families with very young children. Young children are too noisy and lively for this breed and Cavapoos can be easily scared if things get out of control or if children approach them a little too quickly. Very young children should be supervised around this small dog as injury to the dog can occur unintentionally from rough play. These dogs are eager to please and will try hard to do what you ask. Just don’t let them think that they are the boss or they may develop bad habits. Although well-socialized and trained, Cavapoos have the tendency to chase smaller animals, especially if they are not accustomed to them. Again, gentle but firm insistence on ‘good doggie manners’’ should start from the day you get these little powerhouses to obey.

7. Cavapoo require good and frequent maintenance to their appearance.

Grooming needs attention and time to keep their coat clean and soft. Regular bathing and daily brushing help to prevent tangles. Regular clipping and professional grooming every 4 to 6 weeks are recommended. The Cavapoo is recognized as high maintenance when grooming. Their coats need more than regular weekly brushing to keep them at their best. They have a low odor so if yours is smelling it may be that the hair is too long and may have dirt caught in it. Regular bathing and trimming can overcome this. Also check the ears, as the Cavapoo is prone to ear infections, and that condition can produce a nasty smell. It is advisable to get qualified groomers to trim your dog unless you have that experience. Toenails should regularly be inspected to ensure no snags in the fur. They do need clipping often to keep their coat manageable. Get your young Cavapoo used to having his teeth brushed, ears wiped out, and feet handled (for nail clipping), start with short sessions and slowly build up. Praise them extravagantly when they do well, and you will have a dog that enjoys its weekly health check and maintenance program. A Cavapoo owner shares her experience, “ My Cavapoo hates anyone touching or brushing his tail so it can become matted.”

8. Cavapoo require consistency in a postive environment?

Training requires positive reinforcement methods as they have a gentle nature. Cavapoos like to be guided and are obedient if they know their place in the pack. A Cavadoodle owner shared this tip, “Food motivation has enabled me to teach her a ton of tricks and obedience. Housetraining needs patience and consistency as well as positive reinforcement methods.”

9. Cavapoo are indoor dogs and watch for these potential health issues?

It is best for Cavapoos, Cavadoodles and Cavoodles to be indoor dogs who can play outside as well. The major health concerns to watch for are patellar luxation and mitral valve dysplasia.  Occasional diagnoses are cavalier episodic falling syndrome. Cavapoos may develop certain hereditary health issues that are present in their parents. They are prone to diseases like syringomyelia, mitral valve disease, cataracts, hip dysplasia, luxating patella, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), skin issues and epilepsy. However, it is possible that they don’t develop any disease during their lifetime. Minor concerns to be attentive to are entropion cataracts, plus Cavapoos are prone to becoming overweight which will stress their musculoskeletal systems.  Occasional health tests to keep your Cavapoo healthy are x-rays,  electrocardiogram, optical exam, endocardiogram, full physical examination, and complete ophthalmologic examination. Pet health insurance may be a wise investment. Cavapoos are very sensitive to heat and if they become overheated, they can die. Cavapoos should not be over-exercised during childhood because they have sensitive joints and bones. They should not be allowed to jump up or off the furniture, run up and down the stairs or do any other exercises like these.
