Grooming your dogs is critical to the upkeep and health of your pooch. No matter what doodle you have you need the right tools to keep your dog looking good and to avoid health issues with unkempt grooming. We have a blog post about nail grooming and the tools we recommend here.
The other element of grooming is the upkeep of the coat and keeping unwanted hair out of the dog’s eyes. We highly recommend doing this yourself, as depending on your area where you live, the cost of grooming can be pretty high for the regular visits.
We explore the different options on that in a blog post here. Groomer vs Selfcare.
In the hands of amateurs, there really isn’t going to be a huge variance in the quality of facial shears for owners to choose from. In spite of that here is a list of facial shears for you to choose from to get your self-care muscle working!
Things to be mindful of:
If you are not a dog expert in grooming, that is okay but we wanted to make sure to write a quick warning that some owners do struggle with fidgety dogs or even what style they want to cut their dog’s hair in. Hear from a dog owner themselves to what constitutes a struggle.
“My wife told me that during quarantine and everything being closed, I should cut our dogs hair. Like any guy, i decided that the best course of action would be to delay cutting the hair since maybe the restrictions would go away and dog groomers would open back up…
That was back in late spring. By summertime, well the hair had gotten so long it was partially obscuring the vision on the dog’s hair and my wife would yell at me every time my dog would run into things especially when he got the zoomies.
After enough nagging, I decided enough was enough. I told my wife, that I was going to cut his this friday and I did… but I didnt specify how much I was going to cut or were. Now our dog is SIMBA! RULER of the SAFARI!
He is my cuddle buddy now as I sleep on the couch. Probably not worth it..
Clearly, this owner tells a funny story that is great but is probably a good example of somebody who should not be given grooming scissors.
In short, if you are bad with are or have a wicked sense of humor grooming scissors is a bad idea.
What we looked for:
So when decided on what type of scissors to get I realized that the best option for me would be to get the ones with a complete set kit. There are a few out there that have a lot of options and honestly, you are better off having all the tools you need to help trim your dog needs.

A Positive Review From C. Nieman
I like the quality look and appearance of the grooming kit. The scissors feel heavy & if I was a groomer it might get uncomfortable. The kit is comprehensive for grooming dogs with specialty cuts, schnauzer, Bichon, poodle, etc. Everything seems like it will last awhile. They describe how to take care of them for storage & cleaning . I’m happy with this kit and how it’s a step above most of the chain store ones. It’s so much more useful then the ones I’ve been using from discount chains. There is one that is curved for the face and reverse cutting. The kit is designed to be a group of tools you need for muzzles, ears & paws, and all over. Cant beat it for the price. Also, I doubt they will be usable once dropped (they will become out of alignment), if not bent, although they seem to heavy & thick to bend, but you get my drift!
Cons:
- Might need to be resharpened over prolonged usage.
- Heavier set that can exhaust your hand if you have a lot of dog hair to cut.
TL&DR
Complete grooming set with all the tools you need to cut your dog’s hair. Highly rated with safety measures like rounded tips to protect your dog. Easy to buy and sometimes on sales.
Best Value:
Why Do We Like It:
- For the dog grooming space, rounded tips are a must, they are the best thing preventing you from hurting your if they move when you cut. Rounded tipped
- This items low price compared to the full kits works great, wonderful for potential beginners who are not ready to spring for the full amount.
- Ergonomic Grip means less slipping and more cutting. This is best to compare from the regular scissor you have in your home.
- Stainless steel. Less worry about mess and maintenance.
- Adjustable pin for tightens blaes. This is useful if you find that you have other animals you are grooming with the scissors as well.
Positive Review: Marilyn Fierro
My favorite purchase in a very long time. Since I groom the dog myself the sharp scissors are dangerous with their pointed edge, others were not sharp enough, but, this product offers a very sharp cutting area with an equally great blunt end giving the user greater safety. You cannot go wrong with purchasing these scissors.
Cons:
Error danger with ping falling out if you loosen the pin too much.
TL&DR:
Great value scissors that anybody can use and is a great starter item if you are trying to figure out if you can cut your own dog’s hair or not.

Trying to save a little money by grooming my 3 dogs myself. The scissors are easy to hold, sharp, and a good value for the money. As a beginner, I love that the ends are rounded so that I am less likely to hurt one of them.
Cons:
You will need to sharpen your scissors regularly.
You might end up buying the larger pack if you dont spring for it the first time.
TL&DR
A multiple-level pack of scissors for grooming your Dog. A great middle option for people who are not sure how much money they want to spend. Lots of great reviews.

Game changer! I have a goldendoodle so grooming can be a challenge, especially around the face. These scissors are awesome. They are a quality set with sharp blades and a weighted feel. Packaged in a zippered case, each scissor is individually wrapped and has its own elastic holder. I feel confident in keeping up with his grooming at home and saving money.
Cons:
We rated this one so lowly due to possible safety concerns as the tips are not rounded.
The creator of these scissors, prioritizes esthetics over anything else with these scissors and is charging dog owners that premium looks price.
TL&DR:
Compact and nice design with a full kit that comes with good design. The esthetics are nice.
Criteria
We judge the items based on these criteria:
- We checked the ability of the sets that are bought to complete the designated tasks. Not all packages can do everything you need.
- Grooming your dog does not matter as much if you hurt your dog. Safety was given consideration when it came to recommendations.
- If you are going to be spending money on items you might as well make sure they look good. Some of these packages look as good as your pop will look once you cut their hair.
- Money matters, just because you can buy more expensive does not necessarily mean you should. Maybe save some money and buy even better outfits.
Pros + Cons of self-grooming:
Pro:
You will have more creative control on what your dog will look like. Also, you will be saving money when it comes to this recurring cost. Lastly, you can turn this task into a great bonding time with your dog that if you start with early on can lead to the dog being even more comfortable with cuddles later on.
Cons:
Not all people are great hair sculptures if you are going to be doing a doggy day photo operation. You might want to consider having a highly rated professional do it. Also, if your dog is super fidgety, that could also be a problem if you dont have the right scissors as this could lead to accidentally cutting them.
Summary:
You should definitely consider doing this for your dog assuming you have the ability also, you should also make sure you the pair of scissors that are right for you.
